This development involves embedding watermarks into image metadata, a strategy endorsed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). By incorporating these watermarks, tracing the origins of digital images becomes more accessible, allowing users to verify whether an image originated from AI. The watermark takes two forms: an invisible metadata component and a visible CR symbol discreetly placed in the image’s top left corner.

Initially launched on the ChatGPT website and extended to the DALL-E 3 API, this feature will soon be available for mobile users, ensuring seamless integration while upholding image quality standards. Despite concerns regarding potential increases in image sizes and processing times, OpenAI reassures users that these adjustments will have minimal impact.
