WhatsApp Update Introducing Private Contact Tagging in Status Updates | Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is dedicated to improving user experience on its messaging platform. To encourage more interaction among users, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that allows private tagging of contacts within status updates.
According to reports from WaBetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp updates, this upcoming feature will let users mention specific contacts privately in their status updates. Similar to tagging others in Instagram stories, WhatsApp users will soon have the option to include mentions of contacts while creating a status update. These mentions will be visible only to the tagged contacts, who will receive notifications about being mentioned.
Currently in the development stage, this feature aims to enhance user engagement, making WhatsApp statuses more interactive. Initially spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.6.19, the feature is now also being tested in the iOS application, as seen in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS, version 24.7.10.71.

As the feature undergoes testing, it may take some time before it is officially released. However, once available, it will offer users a convenient way to share updates or important moments with selected contacts without cluttering everyone’s status feed.
In addition to status mentions, WhatsApp is introducing a new lock feature, allowing users to lock chats on companion smartphones. Initially reported by WABetainfo, this feature is now accessible in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.8.4, providing enhanced privacy protection for conversations across all linked devices.

Previously, users could secure individual chats with a passcode, but the feature was limited to the primary smartphone. With the latest beta release, Android users can now extend this privacy protection to companion devices by setting up unique passcodes. Additionally, biometric authentication can be used to secure or unlock locked chats on WhatsApp, offering an extra layer of security.
